Health Benefits of Marijuana

Many of the health benefits of Marijuana are still unknown to science. When cannabis was labeled a schedule 1 narcotic in the 1970’s by the US government all research into cannabis was discontinued. Until recently this left a massive knowledge hole in the North American view of medical marijuana. While North Americans turned their backs on cannabis; countries like Israel and Japan continued researching the effects of cannabis on disease in humans. Much of the information we have today is thanks to proper medical experiments and trials conducted in these forward-thinking countries.

What research Says about Medical Marijuana

Up to date research into the medical benefits of cannabis have shown that it provides gat value in the treatment of a wide range of disease and disorders. These include pain relief; neuropathic pain, nausea, spasticity, glaucoma and other movement disorders. As anyone who uses marijuana knows it is a fantastic appetite stimulant, there is no modern drug capable of bring more relief to a chemotherapy patient than cannabis for that fact. It’s also used to prevent “AIDS wasting” which is a side effect of the disease.

There are mental benefits with the treatment of dementia, anxiety, depression as well, helping patients in withdrawal from opioids. New research has suggested that the cannabinoid compounds work with terpenes which are also found in CBD and THC to fight and protect the body from types of malignant tumors.

At this time international health organizations which include the American Public Health Association, Health Canada and the Federation of American Scientists believe that patients should have immediate access to cannabis and cannabis distillates. Other organizations such as American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association support full-scale studies to begin immediately.

Health Benefits Marijuana

More than 60 studies related to the effects of cannabis are currently underway by US. and international health associations. The momentum is now with cannabis and to allow every person access to its positive mental and physical effects.

Though many doctors are accepting of cannabis for their patients, many other doctors are not. With the weak lines drawn in the sand by the Federal government, most doctors are too worried about legal repercussions to risk getting involved with medical marijuana. If you can’t get medical access, there are plenty of ways to access cannabis such as local compassion groups and growers. I’m currently working on a tutorial about how to make Rick Simpson oil also known as Phoenix Tears.

Safety and Efficacy of Marijuana

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), keeps a statistical compilation of all drug-related deaths in the USA and have found that there has never been a reported case of THC causing death. Other studies conducted have shown that there is no such thing is a cannabis overdose. The health benefits of marijuana seem to be far reaching at this point but much more research needs to be completed on the  Health Benefits Marijuana.

Health Benefits Marijuana’s Natural Therapeutic Benefits

The origins of cannabis are thought to be from central Asia as there are reports of its use more than 2000 years before Christ. This plant made its way around the world and found new uses along the way. Today millions of people from different cultures and backgrounds all over the globe use cannabis recreationally or medicinally. The reason why marijuana is grown throughout the world by all these different cultures is that it makes people feel better.

The human body is hardwired with cannabinoid receptors which can be found all throughout the body. These receptors uptake tiny amounts of cannabinoid compounds produced by the body. When marijuana is ingested, the Cannabinoids attach themselves to these receptors which then produces therapeutic as well as physio active effects.

Cannabis and the Digestive tract

Everyone that smokes cannabis knows that getting hunger is a side effect. The power of the munchies is so strong that it is used to treat nausea in cancer patients very successfully. In a study published by the International Journal of Eating Disorders suggests that cannabis has its place in dealing with eating disorders such as anorexia.

There are currently studies running to investigate cannabis use in the treatment of digestive revealed conditions such as Crohn’s Disease, Diabetes and Irritable bowel syndrome.

Marijuana for Pain

There are many studies to date supporting cannabis’ efficacy as a pain reliever. These studies showed that THC and CBD, the major acting cannabinoids in cannabis were found to be effective in reducing pain levels associated with conditions such as cancer, neuropathy, spasticity, headache, migraines as well as other acute pain conditions. CBD and THC interact with the bodies endocannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors. This interaction regulates the central nervous systems immune cells as well as release neurotransmitters to relieve pain.

Mental Health and Marijuana

There are a lot of reports about the negative effects of cannabis on mental health but not much in the ways of studies to prove it. marijuana is known to trigger anxiety in some people but also is apt at treating anxiety in other people. In some patients, high doses of THC could speed up the onset of predisposed personality disorders.

Some recent research says that cannabinoids are linked to a growing number of conditions as a treatment such as depression, anxiety, Schizophrenia and opiate withdrawal.

Cancer and Marijuana

Marijuana, known to provide relief from the side effects of chemotherapy is now being examined by oncologists for its possible cancer-fighting benefits. Previous research has shown that THC and CBD have cancer-fighting effects, but many doctors worry about its psychotropic effects. There is concern that THC will be abused because of its psychotropic effects.

One longtime treatment options patients have been exploring on their own is the “Rick Simpson oil treatment plan.” This plan uses high doses of THC/CBD oil to fight tumor growth. Also called Phoenix Tears the oil is a derivative of pure THC and CBD which is extracted with a solvent such as isopropyl alcohol. One pound of marijuana produces only 50 grams of this potent elixir.

It is believed that ingesting cannabis has significantly more cancer fighting effects then smoking the same substance. Here are some studies that support medical marijuana for cancer.

Brain Cancer

In a study at the University of Madrid, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology found that THC and other cannabinoids provided significant support in inhibiting cancer tumor growth in patients. This study was achieved while delivering safe doses of THC and CBD without psychoactive effects.

A study that was published in the Journal of Neuroscience examined both acute neuronal damage and progressive neurodegenerative found that THC and other cannabinoids reduced neuronal injury.

Another published study in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics concluded, that cannabidiol or CBD has shown to exhibit antitumor properties. During this study a non-psychoactive cannabinoid compound was exposed to human glioma cell lines which led to a drop in the viability of the glioma.

Breast Cancer

One study published in the US National Library of Medicine demonstrated that cannabidiol (CBD) inhibits breast cancer cell proliferation. The same study determined that CBD greatly reduced the tumor mass overall.

I recent study by the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics found that THC and cannabidiol reduced breast cancer cell growth. The study underlined the fact that the effectiveness of THC and cannabidiol has been clinically proven.
Another study by the journal Molecular Cancer found that THC and Cannabinoid compounds reduced tumor growth and numbers in patients. It was determined that THC and CBD could prevent cancer cells from expanding into new cells.

Prostate Cancer

A study published in the US National Library of Medicine illustrates a decrease in prostatic cancer cells by acting through cannabinoid receptors.
A study published in the US National Library of Medicine outlined multiple studies proving the effectiveness of cannabis on prostate cancer.

Liver Cancer

A study published by the US National Library of Medicine determined that THC reduces the viability of human HCC cell lines (Human hepatocellular liver carcinoma cell line) and inhibits their growth.

Pancreatic Cancer

A study published in the American Journal of Cancer determined that cannabinoid receptors are expressed in human pancreatic tumor cell lines and tumor biopsies at much higher levels than in normal pancreatic tissue. Results showed that cannabinoid administration induced apoptosis. They also reduced the growth of tumor cells, and inhibited the spreading of pancreatic tumor cells.

Cannabis beyond Cancer

Cannabis treatments aren’t simply just for pain management and fighting cancers. Medical Cannabis is also used for treating Epilepsy. Marijuana has been know for its anti-convulsive effect for centuries but doctors are now interested in more studies to determine just how cannabis is able to treat epilepsy.

Cannabis and Multiple Sclerosis

Much of the medical information on the health benefits  of marijuana we have now comes from studies completed at the University of Tel Aviv. Israel didn’t out law cannabis, so they are years ahead of the United States in Cannabis research. Their team of scientists reported that both CBD and THC compounds successfully to treat Multiple Sclerosis symptoms in mice.

Cannabis has taken a beating over the years from the government who demonized the substance as a gateway into more powerful drugs. The facts aren’t with the government but are on the side of safe, natural usage. Cannabis remains one of the most exciting areas of medicine for a variety of conditions. More research is needed to take cannabis to the next level, but the good news is with more legalization this work is now getting done.
